International justice means taking responsibility by the international community for some of the most heinous crimes such as enslavement, deportation, genocide, war crimes, torture, sexual violence and many others for which the victims are denied justice, due to many reasons. It symbolises the unity of international community to stand against any crime or disorder. There are many mechanisms of justice under international legal regime. The International Criminal Court which was established in 2022, is a permanent court and could investigate and prosecute persons questionable of committing war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. Also since 2018, the crime of aggression in situations where national authorities are unable or unwilling to act has also came under the purview of ICC. There are Hybrid courts which are generally established to investigate and prosecute large-scale crimes under international law in such countries which have gone through crisis or dispute and it lacked necessary requirements to meet fair trial standards. Also, two ad hoc tribunals have been established till date:
1. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, located in Arusha, Tanzania
2. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, located in The Hague, The Netherlands.
Both of them courts are now closed.
Besides various organisations and human right bodies also work globally for restoration of peace and prosperity.
To mark and strengthen the importance of the international justice system, World Day of International justice is observed on July 17 of every year. It celebrates the momentous approval of the Rome Statute and the formation of the new international criminal justice system in 1998.World Day for International Justice 2022 is celebrated on the theme “Achieving Social Justice through Formal Employment”.
