Coconut is an edible fruit obtained from coconut palm which is a tree of the palm family. It is mostly found along the coastal regions in the wet tropical areas of Asia in Malaysia, India, Indonesia, the Phillippines and Sri Lanka. Coconuts have many uses including food, medicines, cosmetics, building materials and fuel. The Coconut has religious significance in many communities especially Hinduism where it is considered to represent the Hindu trinity of Brahma, the creator; Vishnu, the protector and Mahesh, the destroyer. Devotees seek blessings of the trinity by treating coconut as an object of worship. It is considered auspicious to break the coconut during worshipping. Coconut attains significant importance and role in the agrarian economy of India. It is mostly produced by small and marginal farmers. It produces copra and coconut oil which is extensively used in the manufacture of various industrial products. Also, fibre is obtained from it's husk which is used to support coir industry.
Owing to wide importance of coconuts, and to spread awareness about it's benefits, the first World Coconut Day was observed by the Asia Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) on September 2, 2009 and it is continuing since then. The World Coconut Day theme for the year 2022 is "Growing Coconut for a Better Future and Life".
