Endangered species are those species which are considered to be facing a very high risk of extinction globally. As species are going extinct, they are coming out of the food chain. As a result, animals which used to eat those species, need to find new food sources or they would have to starve. In this situation, the populations of other plants or animals would suffer. Also, if a predator goes extinct, its prey's population can increase rapidly in number, thus unbalancing local ecosystems. Hence, balance of ecosystem should be preserved and for that, the endangered species need to be protected.
Several concerns were raised regarding the welfare of animals in the 1960s and 1970s. In the United States, the Endangered Species Act came into being on 28th December, 1973. The main objective of this Act was to create awareness about the conservation of wildlife and the resettlement of endangered species. Established by the US Senate, the celebration of National Endangered Species Day started in 2006.
Celebration of this day spreads awareness about the importance and need to protect endangered species by the international community through various events organised by parks, wildlife reserves, botanical gardens, libraries, schools and other eminent institutions.
