The best introduction to art is to stroll through a museum. The more art you see, the more you’ll learn to define your own taste.” - Jeanne Frank

International Museum Day came into being in 1977 with the adoption of a resolution which was adopted at the International Council of Museums General Assembly held in Moscow, Russia. The day was designated to 'further unify the creative aspirations and efforts of museums and draw the attention of the world public to their activity' and since then International Museum Day is being celebrated on May 18.

Every year, the International Council of Museums sets a theme for this event which harmonises the celebration of the day around a particular central idea. The theme for the  year 2022 is - "The Power of Museums".

The ICOM has set three primary goals for the event in 2022:

  • The power to achieve sustainability: Museums can play a major role in the implementation of the UN-adopted Sustainable Development Goals by contributing to disseminating information on environmental challenges on local level.
  • The power of innovating on digitalisation and accessibility: Bringing innovation in digitalisation could make museums more accessible and  help people to understand complex concepts.
  • The power of community building through education: Vast learning opportunities are available through museums for all and they help in creating an informed civil society.
