National Forest Martyr's Day is celebrated in India on September 11 every year in reverence of people who gave up their lives to protect and preserve forests and wildlife. To recognize the essence and importance of forests in the lives of people, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change announced in 2013 that a day would be observed to honour the forests, wildlife and the people who work to preserve and protect them. Several events are organized to create awareness for protecting forests, wildlife and the environment.
