"One of India's major blessings is the rich store of experience and knowledge available in the rural and tribal areas."- M. S. Swaminathan

India is a land of villages. It is always said that the soul of India rests in its villages. To maintain power balance, to smoothly run the administration and to achieve the fruits of inclusive growth, decentralisation of power is done. This system later came to be known as Panchayati Raj. It  was inaugurated by the first  Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 2 October 1959 at Nagour in Rajasthan. The first elections under the Rajasthan Panchayat Samitis and Zilla Parishads Act, 1959 were held in September-October 1959. After the 73th Amendment in the Constitution of India which was passed on 24th April, 1992, the Gram Sabha was designated as the foundation of the Panchayat Raj System to perform functions and powers were entrusted to it by the State LegislaturesHowever, the amendment came into existence a year later on April 24, 1993. This amendment provides for a three-tier Panchayati Raj System at the village, block and district levels recognized in India. To commemorate the historic moment of passing of Constitution Act (73rd Amendment) in the year 1992, India celebrates National Panchayati Raj day on April 24 every year since 2010, making it one of the most important days in Indian history.
