21st of April is designated by the government of India for celebrating national Civil Services Day because on this day in 1947, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Home Minister addressed the newly formed and appointed Administrative Service Officers at Metcalf House in Delhi. Before India began its "tryst with destiny", Sardar Patel outlined the tasks to be performed by the civil servants in the independent India and laid certain principles of "Surajya" or "good governance".“Your predecessors were brought up in the traditions in which they … kept themselves aloof from the common run of the people. It will be your bounden duty to treat the common men in India as your own,” he said in his address on that day.
The importance of civil servants cannot be overlooked. They are the ones who are responsible for implementation of laws and execution of policies framed by the government. They are responsible for proper running of government and administrative machinery, in a way, for bringing growth and prosperity for the nation.
